Common Mistakes in Setting Goals for your Business

Based on working with clients and learning from my own experiences, I’ve seen a few common mistakes that can completely derail us in achieving the goals we set in our business.

My hope is in highlighting these mistakes, it can help to avoid them, helping you to be more successful when aiming for great things in your business.

Not being specific enough

  • If you’re vague in expressing the end result of your goal, you haven’t created enough of a north star to know when you’ve achieved it: It’s not enough to say that you want to increase your number of customers, but to specifically know by how much, by what %, or by what revenue amount, will help you paint a picture of your north star. Assigning a specific measurement lets you know when you’ve hit your mark or how much is left to go.

Not embedding accountability into the process

  • With little to no accountability, even for yourself, it makes it too easy to put off doing the actions necessary to achieve your goals. Sticking to the consistent hands-on work is tough when you don’t have anyone looking over your shoulder. Find a way to embed accountability, as you work towards your goals: whether it’s through a team, a colleague, a reward system or a coach to help you stay on track.

Taking on too many

  • When it comes to goal setting in your business, I know we want to achieve it all right now, but having too many things to focus on at once actually slows progress. You’re splitting all your resources and spreading them thin in a number of different areas. Choose a few meaningful goals to focus on at one time so you can make meaningful progress and achieve your objectives.

As you consider what you’re working towards right now in your company, check in and see where you can be more specific, even more focussed in your efforts, and ensure there’s accountability built into the process to ensure you stay on track.

Your future business and self will thank you!!

NOW is YOUR time.
